Further Proof That Midsize SUVs Are Best

I have been convinced that midsize, 2-row SUVs are the best vehicles of modern times. If you could only have one vehicle, a midsizer is going to cover everything. The WK2 Jeep Grand Cherokee is the model for dimensional perfection.

I’m going to continue my quest to spread the SUV gospel to enthusiasts. I think this is the one time casual consumers have been smarter than car people.

Canyon carving? Nope.

Manual? Nope.

If I wanted a car to cover everything, I'd get a wagon.

And if you wanted outright space, you'd get a minivan. And if you wanted to go off road, you'd get a BOF SUV. Everything has its purpose, and using something outside of its functional zone is just inane if you ask me.

I agree. My LR4 is 190 inches long, just like the Grand Cherokee. It’s really a good length - still maneuverable, room for loads of stuff inside.

Hobbled in space, gas mileage and over all efficiency. Sounds like the American way.

That’s a little something we call “freedom.” Actually US midsize SUVs are about 1-2 mpg away from having the exact same fuel economy as the US midsize sedan/wagon with the same drivetrain. Getting closer every generation.

I’m at a point where I’m convinced a midsize SUV and a bike will cover everything.

The only thing I don’t like is that for the size of the car, it should have more interior space. The 2009-2013 Forester was *slightly* smaller inside and the cars are a good 10" apart in length.

Ha, no chance. That car in the photo is rated at combined 19mpg. Wagons were getting around 28 for 2012's, bit more than 1-2mpg. Now they are 32 avg for wagons and 22.5 for SUV’s, again a bit more than 1-2mpg.

I’m thinking more apples to apples. Like an RX350 gets 20/28 mpg (AWD 19/26) compared to a GS350 getting 20/29 mpg (AWD 19/26).

I’m just saying that midsized SUVs have the same gas mileage as the older midsize sedan (with similar engine and powered wheels) most people are trading in out here in the US.

That’s my fault for not presenting context. The RX and GS works as an example of the context I mean because is brand new while the GS, though refreshed, is actually an older car. So someone switching from a GS to RX won’t notice the fuel economy drop more than 1-2 mpg.

I’ll have to make a full post since I’ll need to present a context completely plus provide at least 5 apples-to-apples examples that form my argument in the most succinct manner possible. I’ll work on it this week!

My Durango would not fit. Giant rear overhang means I would put the grille in the freezer.

I agree. I settled on a 4Runner as my one do it all vehicle and haven’t looked back. Body on frame, solid rear axle, V8, 2 speed 4x4 transfer case, can tow 7,000lbs, acceptable gas mileage, creature comforts, and the roll down rear window as a bonus.

19/28 for GS350 AWD, but fair enough. There have been improvements, but I think if you look across wagons to suv’s you’ll find wagons outclass every time.
